Amritpal Singh (ANI)
Amritpal Singh, the controversial MP and leader of Waris Punjab De, currently detained in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), is under intense scrutiny following allegations of his involvement in a plot to assassinate Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The conspiracy came to light on April 20, 2025, when leaked WhatsApp chats from a group named ‘Waris Punjab De Team,’ with over 600 members, surfaced on social media, revealing discussions about targeting these political figures in retaliation for the extension of Singh’s NSA detention.
Punjab MP Amritpal Singh in trouble
The Punjab Police have arrested two individuals, Balkar Singh and Pawandeep Singh, and registered an FIR under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and other laws, identifying three key suspects linked to the group. The chats, which included plans for “executions” and references to foreign funding and arms procurement, have alarmed security agencies. SAD leader Majithia has escalated the issue by releasing audio clips allegedly featuring Singh admitting to ties with gangsters like Jaipal Bhullar and involvement in criminal activities, including dacoities. Majithia has demanded a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe, accusing the Punjab Police of inaction.
Trouble Mounts for Amritpal Singh
Singh, arrested in April 2023 after a month-long manhunt, has been a polarizing figure, styling himself after Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. His supporters claim the charges are politically motivated, while critics, including Bittu, whose grandfather, former Punjab CM Beant Singh, was assassinated by extremists, warn of destabilizing forces. As investigations deepen, Singh’s detention and the alleged plot underscore the complex interplay of separatism, politics, and security in Punjab, raising questions about the region’s stability.
